Front Royal police warn of bicycle and vehicle accidents

By Joe Beck

Front Royal police are reminding adults and children to stay alert for increased traffic hazards that accompany the closing of schools and the arrival of summer vacation.

Chief Norman Shiflett reported two vehicle-bicycle accidents in the last month that injured two children, neither of them seriously.

The most recent accident involved a bicycle hitting a vehicle at the intersection of 6th Street and Belair Avenue on June 2. The bicycle, ridden by a 10-year-old boy, struck a vehicle on the passenger side of the front fender, according to a police news release. The boy was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital with minor injuries.

An earlier accident on May 23 left a 17-year-old boy with minor scrapes after he rode his northbound bicycle on Commerce Avenue into the intersection with Manassas Street, according to police. The bicyclist failed to obey a traffic signal and struck a vehicle, police said.

The bicyclist did not require hospitalization.

Sgt. Crystal Cline urged bicyclists to wear helmets, although they are not required to do so in Front Royal.

"Both of those were very close to having the vehicle run over the bike," Cline said of the two recent accidents.

Cline said she hoped parents would equip their children with helmets, set boundaries for their children, be aware of the locations of dangerous intersections and discourage their children's presence in those areas.

"It's summer, and I know people are working, but we've got to have people watching their kids," Cline said. "Summer is the most dangerous season, and we need supervision of our children."
