Girl hospitalized after dog bite in park

By Joe Beck

A 9-year old Toms Brook girl was hospitalized Sunday after a dog bit her in the face at Strasburg Town Park.

Strasburg police said the girl was taken to Winchester Medical Center where it took 16 stitches to close up her facial wounds. Authorities had no information on her condition as of Tuesday afternoon.

Maj. Scott Proctor of the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office said sheriff's deputies were dispatched to the park around 2:30 p.m.

The dog, which belongs to a Frederick County resident, will remain under quarantine in that county until the Shenandoah County Sheriff's Office completes its investigation or the case is resolved in court, Proctor said.

"That's the main reason for the quarantine," Proctor said.

Asked if there were any worries that the dog could be rabid, Proctor replied, "I don't think that's an issue."

The Strasburg Police Department posted a message on its Facebook page warning people not to bring dogs to sporting events at town parks, even if the dogs are kept on a leash.

Police Chief Tim Sutherly said Sunday's incident took place during a soccer game.

"I know the league has asked people not to bring their animals to games just for that reason," Sutherly said, referring to the risks of children being bitten.

"There's just too many kids, even if the dogs are on a leash," Sutherly added.
