A Front Royal man faces nearly eight years in prison and perhaps much more after agreeing in Warren County Circuit Court on Tuesday to plead guilty to aggravated sexual battery, unlawful wounding and several probation violations.
The sexual battery charge against David Allen Bowden stems from an incident on April 27, 2013 when Bowden went for a walk in a wooded area with a 16-year-old girl. Bowden stopped walking, began kissing the girl and committed a sex act with her, despite her telling him to stop, authorities said.
Bowden was charged with unlawful wounding after an incident in the Warren County Jail on Aug. 28. Assistant commonwealth's attorney Anna Hammond said Bowden "viciously" punched and kicked Kevin Brown after hearing from another inmate that Brown had been sleeping with Bowden's live-in girlfriend. The attack left Brown with head injuries that required several stitches to close, Hammond said.
Hammond said she was satisfied with the plea agreement under which Bowden could be sentenced to up to 20 years on the sexual battery charge and five years for unlawful wounding. The sentencing hearing is scheduled for September.
"The commonwealth entered the plea agreement to spare the victim, family and friends the stresses of a trial, and we feel the plea agreement protects adequately the commonwealth's interest in this matter," Hammond said of the sexual battery case.
The plea agreement calls for Bowden to serve 73/4 years on several probation violations, but the exact amount of his sentence on the other charges will be determined at the sentencing hearing.
The plea agreement also calls for a probation term of up to 20 years, depending on the outcome of the sentencing hearing.
