Morehead Scholarship promotes educational goals

STRASBURG — The Michael Morehead Scholarship has awarded $21,500 to Strasburg High School students over the last seven years. This year’s scholarship of $3,500 was higher than usual, and organizers say they hope next year’s will be even bigger.

Winners of the scholarship, established through the Shenandoah Community Foundation, exhibit high moral character and integrity. The foundation considers applicants’ grades, goals and extracurricular activities, according to Patsy and Stanley Morehead, who started the scholarship in memory of their son.

This year’s winner was recent Strasburg graduate Jonathan Kloosterman, described by Stanley Morehead as a “well-rounded student and person.”

He said Kloosterman, who was competing in a state track meet at the time he was awarded the scholarship, plans to attend James Madison University in the fall.

Normally $3,000, the scholarship amount is based on 4 to 5 percent of the fund’s worth. Currently, the fund has more than $100,000, according to Jeanne Russell, the foundation’s program coordinator.

“Generally, the policy is to do about 4 percent of what the fund is worth,” Russell said. It’s a conservative amount she said allows the Moreheads to keep growing the fund.

The Moreheads have been raising money for the scholarship from sales through the food truck they call Mike’s Diner at Strasburg’s Mayfest, Octoberfest and 4th of July celebration. Patsy Morehead said they also receive regular donations for the fund from friends of their son and from other generous givers.

“We’re very, very thankful for all the people who have supported it,” she said.

Michael Morehead was 31 when he died from Non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma in 2007 after an eight-month, 22-day battle with the disease. Stanley Morehead said the scholarship helps keep his son’s memory alive while helping other young people reach their career goals.

“Everyone who’s received one of these scholarships, they’ve all gone on to do great things,” he said. “They’re all outstanding people.”
