Pet of the Week: Boomer shies away from trouble

EDINBURG -- Boomer is precisely the type of dog that the phrase, "puppy dog eyes," was invented for.

A brief look into his large brown eyes can melt the most stoic of hearts; it's tempting to hug him for days and not let go.

"He has the saddest eyes I've ever seen on a dog," said Katrina Keywood, animal caretaker at the Shenandoah County Animal Shelter. "If he doesn't know you, he will cower away from you, but once he gets to know you, he does warm up to you and is very happy and outgoing."

Boomer, an 8-year-old miniature pinscher-shepherd mix, first arrived at the shelter in early May with four other senior dogs when their owner was moving away and couldn't keep them.

Those four dogs have all found a permanent home or a rescue group since then, and Boomer is the only one remaining.

Because of his senior age, Boomer is starting to show signs of arthritis in one leg and appears to limp occasionally.

If Boomer lost some weight -- he's currently listed at 48 pounds -- Keywood said it would lessen some of the pressure on the leg.

"He's more of a couch potato," she said. "He's looking to be by your side, doing what you're doing. I don't really see him bringing a ball back to you or chasing after [other animals]."

Boomer gets along with cats and other dogs, Keywood said. She said he would fit well in a home with older kids "who know how to respect an animal and aren't in his face all the time" as well as older couples.

Boomer is neutered and is current on all of his vaccinations. The price for adopting him is $25.

Anyone interested in adopting Boomer can contact the Shenandoah County Animal Shelter at 540-984-8955. Visit the shelter at 268 Landfill Road, Edinburg, or go to shenandoah.petfinder.com for more information.
