Search warrant describes child aiding stricken mother

By Joe Beck

A search warrant affidavit filed in Warren County Circuit Court describes an incident June 7 in which a child went to the aid of his mother after finding her unresponsive in their Front Royal home.

The case, which the search warrant affidavit lists as a possible violation of laws governing possession of illegal drugs, remains under investigation by the Northwest Virginia Regional Drug Task Force.

No charges have been filed against the woman, identified in the affidavit as Brandy Dawson of 343 Kendrick Lane.

The affidavit, filed by Sgt. Kevin M. Coffman of the drug task force, states that Dawson's 8-year-old son found her unresponsive with a syringe "and took the needle out of Dawson's hand, placing it on the table where a spoon with cotton was also located on the table."

In an interview Wednesday, Coffman said a next-door neighbor called the Warren County rescue squad after the boy sought help.

"All I know is she was unresponsive to the kid," Coffman said of Dawson. "The mom was unresponsive, and the kid went to the next door neighbor."

The affidavit states that Dawson told police that she found a syringe in a backpack in her residence that was filled with a liquid.

"At that time, Dawson informed (a police officer) that she had tasted the liquid, which had a bittersweet flavor, and she passed out," the affidavit states.

Dawson refused treatment after she was taken to the hospital, according to the affidavit.

She also told a police officer that "she had found several syringes in her bedroom under the bed while cleaning, and she had thrown them in the trash can in her residence as well," the affidavit states.

Coffman said the case remains under investigation.

The search warrant documents list the loaded syringe, several pill bottles, an empty needle bag and the spoon with residue and cotton as among the items seized during the search.
