316 Sherando graduates set to receive diplomas
By Ryan Cornell
The 316 seniors in Sherando High School's graduating class are expected to receive their diplomas during the school's commencement ceremony at 7 p.m. Wednesday at Arrowhead Stadium.
Students in Sherando's class of 2014 have been awarded scholarships totaling $940,440 -- including money from the military for students receiving the Montgomery GI Bill benefits and tuition assistance -- according to Steve Edwards, coordinator of policy and communications for Frederick County Public Schools.
He said the most popular schools for Sherando seniors this year include Virginia Tech, the University of Virginia, James Madison University, George Mason University, Radford University and Lord Fairfax Community College.
Sherando Principal John Nelson described the class as a "very cooperative group" of student leaders.
"The seniors have been very dedicated to their school and community," he said. "I'm looking forward to seeing the members of the class enjoy success and making a difference in the world in the future."
Meron Siira is the class valedictorian, and Catherine Pollack is the salutatorian.
Edwards said Siira and Pollack had the highest and second highest grade point averages in the class, respectively.
"To be eligible, the students must fulfill the requirements for an Advanced Studies Diploma and complete at least two Advanced Placement or approved College-Dual Enrolled courses," he added in an email.
Marla Demerly and David Finnell will deliver the commencement address prior to the graduation ceremony.
Demerly, head of the special education department at Sherando, was selected by teachers and staff as the school's 2014 Teacher of the Year.
Finnell, an English teacher at the school, was selected by members of the National Honor Society as their teacher of the year.
The graduation ceremony will also include the traditional senior tribute, the Legend of the Cap and Gown and "The Warrior's Farewell."
Because of anticipated traffic congestion, those attending the ceremony are encouraged to arrive early.
A release from the division states that graduation photo galleries will be published on the Frederick County Public Schools website - http://tiny.cc/ig4vgx and its Facebook page - http://tiny.cc/hh4vgx in the days following the ceremony.
In case of inclement weather, the ceremony will be postponed to 7 p.m. Thursday.
