State police investigate road rage case in Stephens City

By Joe Beck

State police are investigating a case of road rage around 4:30 p.m. on June 3 in Stephens City off of Interstate 81.

Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler issued a news release Tuesday reporting that the incident began on southbound I-81 with two vehicles traveling near mile marker 307.

The drivers' identities were not given. They were described as a 26-year-old woman driving a gray 2007 Chevrolet SUV and a dark blue or black 1990s Chevrolet pickup truck driven by a man in his 40s with graying hair and a slender build. The pickup truck was equipped with a ladder rack.

The two motorists had an early altercation and then exited the interstate, according to the state police. While they were stopped at a traffic light, the driver of the pickup truck left his vehicle and used a tire iron he was carrying to smash out the passenger window on the SUV, state police said.

The woman responded by spraying the driver with mace, and the pickup truck driver left the scene, state police said. He was last seen traveling westbound on Va. 277, according to state police.

Tyler said the case remains under investigation by trooper J.M. Myers. Anyone who may have witnessed the incident or can provide other information is asked to contact Myers at 662-3313 or the state police at 829-7771.

Daniel Hoopes, an administrative assistant with the Frederick County Commonwealth's Attorney Office, said in an interview Monday that no one in his office could comment on the case until they had reviewed a report from the state police.

"We should know more about the incident on Wednesday, Hoopes said. "We should be getting a copy of the report by then."
