The 175 students in Strasburg's graduating class of 2014 will receive their diplomas at a ceremony at 7:30 p.m. Friday in the high school's new gym.

The class valedictorian is Morgan Carter, who will be studying biology at the University of Virginia. The salutatorian is Madison Doehler, who will major in Arabic at the University of Mary Washington.

Amy Zimmerman, 11th and 12th grade counselor at the school, referred to the two as "phenomenal women."

She described the contributions to local churches and community agencies given by students in the graduating class.

"The top 20 percent of the senior class is outstanding not just academically," she said. "They participate, they give back to the community, they're high achievers in every aspect of their life, including their personal life.

"Several have even gone on mission trips this summer in various areas of the country and around the world," she added. "That's very impressive for a group of kids in high school."

According to Zimmerman, more than $1.3 million -- including military education packages for the 11 students who have decided to enlistĀ -- has been awarded in scholarships to graduating seniors from Strasburg.

Four seniors from Strasburg completed the program at Massanutten Regional Governor's School, which emphasizes environmental science and technology.

"One [student] wants to become an environmental lawyer, one wants to be in the EPA," she said. "This group is definitely an anomaly."

Along with Carter and Doehler, Strasburg Principal Ken Knesh will speak at the commencement ceremony.
