Wanted man turns himself in to Strasburg police

By Joe Beck

The Strasburg Police Department's Facebook page calls the arrest Wednesday of Jeremiah Lanham, 30, of Mauertown, the easiest ever made by the department.

Deputy Chief Jerome Robinson said Lanham turned himself into police officers after seeing them at 12:30 p.m. Wednesday conducting a training exercise outside the Crystal Chase apartment building at 195 Charles St. The training was for members of the department's special operations team.

"While they were at Crystal Chase apartments, dispatch received a call that Jeremiah Lanham had called dispatch and advised he wanted to turn himself in," Robinson said in an interview Monday.

Robinson said Lanham was wanted in Rockingham County on a misdemeanor charge of making threatening phone calls.

"He had seen us outside preparing for training," Robinson said. "The guys were putting on special gear. I guess he assumed we were there for him and dispatch, which knew we were there for training, called us, and he subsequently came out and turned himself in."

Robinson, who was among those participating in the training, said Lanham was transported to the Shenandoah County Jail and returned later in the day to Rockingham County.

Robinson said he didn't know if Lanham realized his mistake after turning himself in, but officers involved in the training were using blue plastic guns instead of their normal firearms during the exercise.

"After he came out, he had to see the officers with the Smurf blue guns," Robinson said of Lanham.
