FRONT ROYAL -- Ava's tail does not stop wagging when she is around people.

A pit bull mix, Ava was dropped off at the Humane Society of Warren County in November. She is a senior dog, around 9 years old or so, according to kennel Director Marcy Gallo.

Ava has become a shelter favorite due to her sweet disposition, Gallo said.

Found as a stray, Gallo added that Ava was very skinny when she first arrived. Now a healthy weight, she is low energy and adores all people.

"She would be great for an older couple," Gallo said.

Or, she added, for a family with older children -- Ava may not have enough energy to keep up with younger kids who want to play all the time. But, kennel attendant Kayla Wines pointed out, her new owners should expect to get plenty of dog kisses, because Ava is very affectionate.

"She also has this adorable pig snort," Gallo said. "She'll just snort at you to get your attention."

Gallo encourages all those who come into the shelter to judge each dog individually. Pit bulls are often said to have bad reputations, but Ava is a very sweet, mellow dog.

She would do best in a house without any other dogs -- she is not aggressive toward them, Gallo said, but prefers to have her people to herself.

But she loves walking and does very well on the leash, Gallo added.

Ava is spayed and her adoption is sponsored, so her new family would not have to pay a fee. She does have a mass on her side, though, and veterinarians recommend it be removed after she is adopted.
