Man, woman accused in beating of Strasburg man

By Joe Beck

WOODSTOCK -- A man and a woman have been charged with aggravated malicious wounding in a June 25 incident that sent a Strasburg man to the hospital with a broken jaw and broken ribs.

Anna Leigh Holland, 32, of Mill Road in Woodstock, and Michael Huddle, 43, of Gospel Street in Mount Jackson, were ordered held without bond at an initial court appearance Tuesday. Holland is also charged with assault and battery of a second victim.

Strasburg Deputy Police Chief Jerome Robinson said the two were arrested after a fight in an apartment on Massanutten Circle. Holland, who was found lying injured on the ground, was arrested at the scene and Huddle was arrested later by Winchester police, Robinson said.

Robinson said officer Matt Troxell was dispatched to the apartment around 11:30 p.m. and found the victim, Donald Ray Alexander, lying on the floor.

"He was bleeding about the face area," Robinson said of Alexander.

Robinson said Troxell found someone had exited the apartment through a window almost 20 feet above the ground.

Troxell heard Holland screaming and found her lying on the ground outside the building, Robinson said, adding that Huddle had left the scene.

"She went out the window and injured herself," Robinson said of Holland, adding that she was taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital after complaining of hip and lower back pain.

Robinson said one or both of the defendants had punched Alexander in the face after they had entered the residence and a disagreement broke out between the three.

Robinson said Alexander suffered a broken jaw and several broken ribs and minor cuts to his body during the fight. Robinson said Alexander had remained in the hospital until at least June 27 but had no further information on the victim's condition at the time of the interview on Tuesday.

Robinson said Troxell noticed a strong odor of alcohol on Holland's breath at the time of her arrest.

"She stated she was drunk," Robinson said of Holland.

Just before Holland jumped from the window, she punched a neighbor of Alexander's, Robinson said.

"It appears the neighbor came in and tried to help (Alexander), and she assaulted him and then tried to escape by jumping out the window," Robinson said.

Holland appeared in a wheelchair at her initial hearing before General District Judge Amy Tisinger. Holland spoke briefly about "people who filed bogus charges against me" before Tisinger cut her off and told her to wait until her court-appointed public defender appeared with her at the next hearing scheduled for July 7.

Huddle told Tisinger that "I wasn't even there" during the fight, but Tisinger also told him not to make any statements until he had a court-appointed lawyer with him at his next hearing, also scheduled for July 7.

Robinson said the case remains under investigation. He asked anyone with information about the case to contact Troxell at 465-5230.
