Middletown police car damaged in accident

By Joe Beck

One of the Middletown police department's cruisers has been off the road since July 12 as a result of damage from a collision with a civilian vehicle.

Chief Philip Breeden said an insurance company adjuster has estimated damage to the cruiser at $5,000. Breeden said the car will return to patrol after it is repaired.

No one was injured in the accident.

Breeden said a state police investigation into the accident resulted in no citations to either the policeman driving the cruiser or the driver of the car that struck the cruiser.

"It was a no-fault accident," Breeden said in an interview Wednesday.

Breeden said the accident happened around 2:30 p.m. July 12 in the 8000 block of U.S. 11. The driver of the civilian car hit the police car, which was driven by Cpl. Daniel Manili, in the rear quarter panel on the driver's side.

It was the second accident for Manili since March 2013 when he chased a suspected narcotics law offender through Middletown into downtown Strasburg and crashed his vehicle.

Manili was treated for minor injuries in the earlier accident, and his police car was declared a total loss.

The suspect, Devon Renard Gray of Woodstock, was arrested days later and pleaded guilty in February in U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg to three counts of possession with intent to distribute heroin and one count of possession of a firearm after being convicted of earlier serious drug offenses or violent felonies.

Gray is scheduled to be sentenced July 30.
