Aquaculture workshop

The first Virginia/Mid-Atlantic Regional Aquaculture Best Management Practices Training Workshop will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 23 at the Hampton Roads Agricultural Research and Extension Center, 1444 Diamond Springs Road, Virginia Beach. Topics covered include:

  • What are aquaculture best management practices?
  • FDA aquaculture regulations, guidelines, and future trends/considerations
  • State regulators/regulations
  • Fish health
  • All about aquaculture feeds
  • Best management practices for hatcheries, raceways, ponds, cage culture, hydroponics/aquaponics, recirculating aquaculture systems, harvest and post-harvest handling.

Vegetable, berry field day

Commercial Vegetable and Berry Field Day will be held from 9 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. July 24 at Virginia State University Randolph Farm, 4415 River Road, Ettick.

Tour stations will include vegetable trials, high tunnels, ginger, cut flower and berry production updates. The keynote speaker is Ellen Polishuk, ecoganic vegetable grower, biological farm consultant and teacher. More information: visit VSU’s Facebook page or call Mollie Klein at 804-524-5960.

Pasture lambing workshop

A pasture lambing workshop will be held from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. July 30 at Virginia State University Randolph Farm, 4415 River Road, Ettick.

Topics covered include lamb gestation, birthing, processing, positioning and dealing with unexpected complications. In the afternoon, participants will observe ewes ready to give birth and will be able to assist during the lambing process. Workshop facilitators include Stephan Wildeus, VSU small ruminant research professor, and Dahlia O’Brien, VSU small ruminant extension specialist.
