Shenandoah County Public Schools announced Monday the appointment of Kristin "Kris" Waldrop as principal at Peter Muhlenberg Middle School in Woodstock. She has resigned as principal at Greenwood Mill Elementary School in Frederick County, effective Aug. 1.

Waldrop, who was principal at Senseny Road Elementary School for two years before starting at Greenwood Mill in 2009, has lived in Strasburg for seven years and said she looks forward to serving the county in which she resides.

"I'm very grateful and excited for the opportunity," she said Tuesday. On her move to the middle school, she said, "that's where I began my career 16 years ago."

"Each level has its own unique set of needs," she said, but "middle school brings about a time of drastic change for children. ... They need instructors that really understand them."

A Winchester native, Waldrop began her career as a special education teacher in Loudoun County. She also taught in Georgia, where she was an elementary school assistant principal and principal before she returned to the Winchester area.

Waldrop has been with Greenwood Mill since the school opened five years ago, said David Sovine, superintendent for Frederick County Public Schools, and "has been an exceptional leader for us."

"This is an opportunity for her career-wise," Sovine said. "We wish her well and we will begin the search process for a new principal at Greenwood Mill."

The Shenandoah County School Board appointed Waldrop at its July 28 meeting, filling a vacancy that occurred when long-time Principal Gina Stetter accepted the position of director of special education at the county's central office.

"We're certainly excited about her joining our team," said Jeremy Raley, superintendent of Shenandoah County Public Schools. "She's very student centered."

After meeting the faculty at Peter Muhlenburg on Tuesday, Waldrop said she's impressed by the school's reputation and said the teachers are "in it for the right reasons."

"I hope to add to that and enhance that," she said.

The first day of school in Shenandoah County is Sept. 2. In Frederick County, classes begin Aug. 18.
