Woodstock set to dedicate expanded park

By Alex Bridges

Woodstock dedicates its revitalized W.O. Riley Park on Friday with live music and food — rain or shine.

Construction workers this week made finishing touches to the park’s new features while users took advantage of amenities already available. The $1.5 million project remodeled the tennis and basketball courts and added several play areas and other features.

People can access the park by taking South Summit Avenue. The pool and splash pad will be open with free admission from 5-9 p.m. Food vendors 1752 Barbecue and Tony’s Pizza open at 6 p.m. Mayor Jeremy McCleary will lead the dedication ceremony that begins at 6:30 p.m. The ceremony will include a ribbon cutting and the unveiling of the dedication plaque. The Instigators will perform live music from 7-9 p.m.

Contractor F.D. Neal Construction was working to reach substantial completion on the project by Friday.

Assistant Town Manager Angela Clem said the project is another way to make Woodstock better.

“I think that it is just enhancing the park amenity that we already have in Woodstock and it’ll be a place for families to enjoy,” Clem said. “Maybe it’ll be one more thing that improves the quality of life in Woodstock because I already feel like we’re doing a great job.”

The town divided the project into two phases to allow the construction firm to renovate the basketball and tennis courts last fall in time for the spring season.

The second phase includes an events space and brick-paver walkway to the stage; shaded areas; landscaping and new restrooms. The maintenance building has a new facade. The project replaced the playground with new equipment and a rubberized surface. The playground has the typical post-and-deck structure, a water feature, swing set, a group swing and the Berliner Seilfabrik climbing web as well as two berm slides. The natural play area incorporates a tunnel and a bridge into natural materials.
