Authorities: Be alert on roads as Warren schools open

By Josette Keelor

Anticipating Monday's start of public schools in Warren County, town and county authorities have reminded area motorists to pay particular attention near schools, bus stops and residential neighborhoods.

Police are urging motorists to watch for children on bikes, buses or on foot, and residents should also pay attention to reduced speed limits near schools and bus stops and an increase of traffic moving more slowly than usual.

Motorists also should allow for extra travel time, Sheriff Danny McEathron said Friday.

"Use extra caution," he said, because "kids are going to be running around."

On the public schools website, http://www.wcps.k12.va.us, schools outline changes in bus routes and times, particularly walk zones for Warren County Middle School, which now lists the following roads: 500 block of Kerfoot Avenue, 200 block of West Criser Road, Cemetery Lane, Lee Street, Overlook Drive, Luray Avenue, the 0-499 block on the west side of South Royal Avenue, the 0-50 block of North Royal Avenue, Peakova Lane, Druid Hill, the 0-299 block of Salem Avenue, Oakridge Court, Sherwood Avenue, Oak Street, the 0-299 block of Cherry Street, the 0-299 block of Orchard Street, West First Street, Edgewood Street, Massie Street, the 100-399 block of West Main Street, the 100 block of Union Street, West Jackson, West Stonewall, West Prospect Street and North Street.

Elementary schools open at 8:40 a.m. and close at 3:10 p.m. Middle and high schools open at 8:20 a.m. and close at 3:30 p.m.

Back to school time is also a good time to remind the community of pedestrian safety, and the Sheriff's Office has teamed with the Front Royal Police Department on an upcoming public safety announcement that Police Officer Travis Cave said will be on the Front Royal mobile app, the town website, at http://www.frontroyalva.com and local channel 16.

Cave said he doesn't know yet when the video will be completed.

"Since school is upcoming, it's more of a concern now," he said.

He would remind residents to use the old lessons of looking both ways before crossing the street and not assuming that nearby drivers can see you before you plan to cross.

"We especially have people use crosswalks when they're available," he said.

"Pay attention. Be alert."
