Warren County Fair returns with plenty of updates

By Ryan Cornell

If there's one thing the Warren County Fair won't be lacking next week, it's facial hair.

A new event at this year's fair is the mustache and beard contest, which pits contestants head-to-head -- or rather upper lip to upper lip -- for the honor of best facial hair.

Although, there's no need to fret if you've forgotten to let it all grow out. A slew of other contests for fairgoers, including horseshoe and corn hole tournaments and a dance competition, are scheduled.

Warren County Fair President Mike Garrett said they're all part of a bunch of new additions to the 57th annual Warren County Fair, held Aug. 4-9.

"It's time for a change," he said. "We're trying to get the community involved, more members, more volunteers and more people to help at the fairground."

He said the Wonder Building, where many of these competitions are held, will also feature a mining trailer where kids can sift through rocks and try to find gems and gold.

The fair will host a solid lineup of musical acts, including the Johnny Cash tribute band The Cash Express on Thursday, country quintet Restless Heart on Friday and Marty Haggard, son of the "Okie From Muskogee," on Saturday.

Garrett said other attractions include camel rides, a demolition derby -- the payout this year is $1,500 -- and a monster truck show featuring five different monster trucks and a somersaulting freestyle motocross rider.

"For a monster truck show that's $5, you can't go anywhere to see a monster truck show for that price," he said. "That's a $50 ticket easily."

People can purchase tickets to the fair at the fairgrounds north of Front Royal off U.S. 522 or through the website or phone.

Tickets are $10 for adults, $5 for children ages 7 to 12 and free for children 6 years old and younger. On Tuesday, tickets are $5 for adults and free for children 12 and younger.
