Golf tournament funds scholarships for students

They’re teeing off for a good cause.

Each October, the Marge Moyers Memorial Scholarship golf tournament attracts golfers from across the commonwealth and funds a scholarship for a needy student.

To date, the tournament has awarded 12 $8,000 scholarships to students who meet two criteria: they’re in financial need and are pursuing a major in education. The scholarship is divided up over four years, with $1,000 awarded each semester.

The golf tournament will be held at the Shenvalee Golf Resort in New Market on Oct. 25- 26. The tournament takes 72 teams.

Eddie Litten, New Market councilman and scholarship committee member, said the tournament started out as the Shenvalee Invitational in hopes of attracting “big name players” to promote the area and golf club.

When Moyers, a longtime teacher and School Board member, died the following year, the committee decided to honor her by awarding educational scholarships in her memory.

Litten said scholarship recipients are required to maintain good grades and continue their studies in education.

The scholarship fund is a subsidiary of the Shenandoah Community Foundation, a 501c3 nonprofit organization.

Litten said entry fees are used to support the golf tournament. All the sponsorship money is placed directly into the scholarship fund, he said.

Prizes for tournament and raffle winners include gift certificates to the resort’s pro shop and a new set of Titleist irons.

“It’s the largest scholarship given out to schools,” Litten said. “So it draws a lot of attention because it’s such a large scholarship, and we would like to get to the point where we give two.”

Past recipients of the Marge Moyers Memorial Scholarship, including two that have returned to teach in Shenandoah County, include: Valerie Neese, Samantha Williams, Katie Orndorff, Sarah Silvious, Jessica Garman, Sarah Vormbrock, Anthony Hammer, Johnathan Middleton, Hayley Moomaw, Clay Foltz and Jeremiah Hines.
