New Market to host doggie pool party

By Ryan Cornell

Perhaps the only thing that smells better than a wet dog ... is an entire swimming pool filled with them.

After the New Market Community Pool closes to the public next month and before it's cleaned for the season, the town will hold its first ever Summer's End Pup Pool Party. Dog owners from all over are invited to bring their furry friends to the public pool from 2 to 4 p.m. on Sept. 21.

Lifeguards will sell drinks and keep watch, door prizes will be awarded and Blue Ridge Dog of Harrisonburg will be giving out goodie bags with homemade dog treats.

Brittany Clem, event and marketing director for New Market, said the pool's chemicals will be adjusted to dog-friendly levels and described the pool party as a "why not type of thing."

"We, as humans, enjoy it all summer, so why not give somebody who walks their dogs in the park a chance to cool off," she said. "I've seen it work other places and think it would be a fun town-enhancing event."

Although the event is organized through the Town of New Market, it will be open to anybody.

Clem said only non-aggressive dogs older than 6 months are allowed and dogs must be up-to-date on their rabies vaccination.

The cost is $3 per dog for admission into the event, while humans get in for free. There is a limit of two dogs per person.

The last day to register is Sept. 19.

People can register by emailing proof of their vaccination and registration form to b.clem@newmarketvirginia.com, faxing it to 540-740-9204 or mailing it or dropping it off at the New Market Town Office. Payment should be made at registration.

For more information on volunteering or registering, contact Clem at 540-740-3432.

"It's a nice event to get the community out in the open mingling together," she said. "We feel it's important to have these small-town events to keep people active and enjoying the town they're living in."
