Plans revived for Family Dollar

MOUNT JACKSON — Don’t give up on the Family Dollar just yet.
Once thought to be driven out of Mount Jackson due to high building costs, the possibility of the store opening on Main Street has resurfaced.
Town Manager Kevin Fauber said he was approached by Ken Hammond of Hammond Real Estate — the firm developing the property — within the last month about reducing construction costs.
“One of the things that was kind of driving up the cost of the project was the all-brick building,” Fauber told the Planning Commission on Monday. “So we kicked around some ideas, some plans have gone back, the way it stands now, they have proposed what’s called a HardiePlank siding.”
HardiePlank is a brand of fiber cement siding popular for its fire-resistant qualities and low maintenance. It’s often used to imitate wooden siding or clapboard.
Planning Commission Chairwoman Bonnie Good voiced support for the proposed building material, and said it kept with the “feel of the town.”
“You would be amazed how many buildings we have in town, how many businesses have wood siding that’s strip like what we’re talking about,” she said. “This would fit into the town’s motif perfectly, especially in that area.”
Fauber said everything else in the site plans would remain the same, including the gabled roof and landscaping.
After the building is built, it would be sold to the company.
The ongoing acquisition of Family Dollar by Dollar Tree would not impact the project, Fauber added.
“It may end up being a Dollar Tree store, but right now they plan on proceeding [as Family Dollar],” he said.
In other business, the Planning Commission received updates on:
- The town’s new fire station, which received approval for its entrance permit last week, and is expected to break ground within the next two months
- The new Holtzman office building, which received its entrance permit last month, and began off-site utility work on Monday
- The Bowman Andros cold storage facility currently under construction
