Town announces enhancement grant recipients

NEW MARKET — A total of $5,000 has been allocated through facade enhancement grants to beautify the town’s historic district.

New Market Town Council’s tourism, economic development and historic preservation committee has approved requests from three downtown property owners for the matching funds grant.

The Shenandoah Valley Battlefields Foundation will receive $2,400, which will be used to repaint the roof of the Lee-Jackson Building at the corner of Congress Street and Old Cross Road.

Steve Roberts will receive $1,500 to replace the siding on his building at 9395 S. Congress St.

Don Conard of the Schultz Theatre will receive $1,100 to repair the canopy over the theater’s front entrance.

Tim Palmer, councilman and committee chairman, said the grant money will reimburse owners after they complete the proposed improvement projects and submit their receipts for related expenses.

He said the committee has discussed increasing its total amount of grant funding from $5,000 to $10,000 for next year.

“It’s encouraging to know that people are coming to the council now, asking for matching monies,” he said. “…Because it does make a big effect on the appearance of the town and it’s going to good use.”

At its meeting on Monday, Town Council also approved vacating its water and sewer easement at 162 E. Old Cross Road.
