Mount Jackson to demolish tennis courts

By Ryan Cornell

The tennis courts at the Mount Jackson Lions Club Park are set to be demolished by this fall.

The park, which sits at the end of Wunder Street, also contains two full-length basketball courts and a baseball field. Town Council approved demolition of the twin tennis courts at its meeting this week.

Mount Jackson Mayor Bucky Miller said the tennis courts are in poor condition, tennis play has decreased and this has been needed for a while.

He said the area could become another picnic pavilion, a third basketball court or used for additional playground equipment, and added that Town Council is open to suggestions on what to use the space for.

"On council, we looked at redoing the tennis courts, and the cost was just frightening," Miller said.

All of the equipment needed to demolish the tennis courts belongs to the town, he said, and soil and labor will also come from the town.

"It'll probably be less than $500," he said. "The only thing that's really going to come out of our pocket is the grass seed."

He said the town will recoup some of its expenses by selling parts of the chain link fence enclosing the tennis court for scrap.

He added that the fenceposts will be recycled for use in a fence around the soccer field at Triplett Tech.

Miller said it should take about a week from demolition to putting the soil back.

In other business on Tuesday, Mount Jackson Town Council passed a resolution to amend the special use permit for the Family Dollar project.
