Town to discuss increasing speeding fines

By Ryan Cornell

STEPHENS CITY -- Town Council is considering harsher speeding fines for one of its main roads.

The section of Fairfax Street west of Main Street would have signage installed and would be designated for enhanced speeding violation fines if the resolution is approved by the Virginia Department of Transportation and the Town Council.

The designation would make speeding punishable by a fine of "no more than $200 when the maximum speed limit is indicated by appropriately placed signs displaying both the maximum speed limit and penalty for violations."

According to Councilman Jason Nauman, the issue was brought up by the police department and was requested by the Stephens Landing homeowners association.

"[T]he established location must meet the following criteria in order to be eligible for the enhanced maximum fine for speeding: identification of a neighborhood or specific location, which would be Fairfax Street west of Main Street," said Nauman, reading from Virginia Code Section 46.2-878.2. "Confirmation that the roadway meets definitions of local residential and collector streets as defined by VDOT, and verification that a speeding problem exists, and I don't think we'll have any problem in that case."

Stephens City Police Chief Charles Bockey said officers have kept an eye on that section of road for speeding drivers.

"They're hitting over 50 miles per hour coming back into town again," he said.

The issue will be discussed at the next Town Council meeting. A resolution also must be sent to VDOT.

In other business, Town Council:

  • Approved appointing Steve Happek to the Planning Commission

  • Announced that the interview process for the town's assistant town manager position has begun
