Lanes shift on Strasburg Road next week

Daily staff report

Motorists should experience no traffic delays when travel lanes on Strasburg Road at the U.S. 340-522 bridge shift next week.

The Virginia Department of Transportation advises that crews working on the replacement of the bridge over the South Fork of the Shenandoah River will shift the eastbound and westbound lanes of Va. 55 one lane to the north, near the intersection of U.S. 340-522.

The shift begins Tuesday, weather permitting, and will remain in effect for at least a year as crews add lanes to Va. 55 and build a new intersection, according to a VDOT press release.

The project replaces the current, four-lane bridge with a new, six-lane crossing over the South Fork and the Norfolk Southern Railway. The project also includes a new, “quadrant roadway intersection” at U.S. 340-522 and Va. 55, north of the bridge and Front Royal.

The $48.4 million contract awarded to G.A. & F.C. Wagman of York, Pennsylvania, in October 2013 calls for the project’s completion by the end of 2017.
