A New Market man has been charged with drunken driving, malicious bodily injury, felony hit and run and drunken driving in connection with a collision Friday between his three-wheeled motorcycle, a pedestrian and a car.
Maj. Scott Proctor of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office identified the defendant as Reece Kirk Varney, 66, of 235 Brannertown Lane.
Proctor said deputies were sent at 4:30 p.m. to a gas station and store in the 3000 block of Senedo Road where a man told them that Varney had struck him hard enough “that (the victim) fell over the windshield of the motorcycle.”
“It was then reported that (Varney) backed up and struck the fuel island and a vehicle that was at the fuel island filling up,” Proctor added.
Proctor said the collision damaged the fuel pump on a 1999 Hyundai sedan and left the motorcycle inoperable.
Proctor said Varney fled the scene on foot, but a deputy located him south of the collision scene.
“An odor of alcohol was detected, an investigation into possible drunk driving conducted, and he was placed under arrest,” Proctor said of Varney.
Proctor said the man allegedly hit by the motorcycle, a resident of the New Market area, refused treatment at the scene.
Proctor said Varney was held without bond after his arrest.
Varney is scheduled to appear at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 10 in Shenandoah County General District Court.
