Front Royal Kmart to close

By Katie Demeria

Front Royal’s Kmart store is scheduled to close its doors early next year.

Howard Riefs, director of corporate communications with Sears Holdings Corp., stated in an email that liquidation sales will start Nov. 2 and the 465 South St. store will officially close to the public in mid-January.

He stated that the move was made to “reduce on-going expenses, adjust our asset base, and accelerate the transformation of our business model.”

Similar reasons were cited as the cause of the Winchester store’s closure earlier this spring.

The Front Royal store supports 88 employee and most of them are part time or hourly. Eligible associates, according to the email, will receive severance packages, and will be able to apply for open positions at other Sears or Kmart stores.

After January, the closest Kmart store to shoppers in the Front Royal area will be in Martinsburg, West Virginia. That location is 37 miles away.

Riefs stated that the Martinsburg store will not be impacted.

“Customers always can order from Kmart.com and have it delivered to their home,” Riefs said in another email. “They can also order from Kmart.com and pick up the item at the Sears store in Winchester.”

Those customers with layaway contracts will be able to either pay off their contract early or transfer their layaway contract to another store or online, the email stated.

“This can be initiated by our customers and done by an associate or in-store,” Riefs stated. “We are communicating with our layaway customers as they come in weekly to make their payments.”
