New Market boosts town manager’s salary

NEW MARKET — Town Council has approved awarding a 3-percent pay raise to Town Manager Mike Ritchie.

Ritchie was hired as New Market’s town manager in July after serving in the interim role since May. He currently makes $75,000 a year.

The 3-percent pay raise, approved unanimously by council members Monday night, totals about $2,250. It becomes effective Jan. 1.

Councilman Eddie Litten, who chairs the council’s finance and personnel committee, said they had agreed to give Ritchie a merit raise if his performance was “up to level or exceeding the level” they expected after six months.

“This is warranted because of the outstanding job Mike has done,” Litten told council members at their meeting Monday. “I think that we, as a council or committee, couldn’t have done a better job of picking a town manager than Mike.

“I’m so proud of him for what he’s done, the excellent job he’s done and what I’m hearing in the town, people are so proud of what we did to hire him, and I’m just happy for that,” Litten added.

In other business, Council:

— Reappointed Barbara Bair and Allen Johnson to the Historic Overlay District Review Board;

— Announced it has received a $500 check from Shentel, designated for the town’s parks and recreation department.
