NEW MARKET — One local restaurant is working to make some Christmases a little merrier.

The Southern Kitchen in New Market is hosting a soup kitchen from 4 to 6 p.m. today to give back to the community.

The restaurant will serve homemade vegetable soup, grilled cheese sandwiches, cookies and sweet tea for those less fortunate in the area. Each meal is free, and registration is not needed.

This is the first time the restaurant has held this type of event, though Manager Cindy Reamer said the owners and staff have been talking about doing this for a while.

“They’ve been wanting to give back to the community for some time,” she said, “and they felt this was a good way to give back.”

She said they hope to continue with it next year if enough people show up.

“We’ll make them feel at home, just like they were paying for their meal here,” Reamer said. “We want them to come and enjoy it.”

The Southern Kitchen is located at 9576 S. Congress St. in New Market. The restaurant will be open for regular business hours from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. today and reopen as a soup kitchen starting at 4 p.m.
