Woman’s body found south of Strasburg

The body of an 89-year-old Luray woman was discovered just south of Strasburg on Wednesday morning.

At 8:30 a.m., deputies from the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to Sandy Hook Road just south of Strasburg on a report of the discovery of a deceased person.

Captain Wesley Dellinger said the body was that of Mary Jennings of Luray. Dellinger said around midnight, Jennings was reported missing to the Page County Sheriff’s Office by her family after going missing around 6 p.m. Tuesday. The report was then forwarded to the Luray Police Department for further investigation.

The Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office was notified around 1 a.m. Wednesday to have deputies keep on the lookout for Jennings’ Ford Taurus.

Deputies found her car stuck on Sandy Hook Road approximately a mile from where her body was found, Dellinger said. He said she had been involved in a minor motor vehicle accident and her car had gotten stuck.

Dellinger said he does not believe foul play was involved and the time of death has not been established. He noted that the temperature overnight was around 20 degrees and that may have factored in her death.

The Luray Police Department is investigating the circumstances of her disappearance and will release details at a later date.
