Woodstock man faces charges from shooting
Shenandoah County authorities charged a Woodstock man Tuesday in connection with the fatal shooting of Gina Angela Shoemaker in a Mount Jackson area residence on Nov. 21.
Shawn Jason Nicely, 37, of 1521 Fravel Road, has been under investigation for his alleged role in Shoemaker’s death in a residence at 259 Charlotte Lane next to property where he had been target shooting.
Capt. Wesley Dellinger said Nicely was taken to the Rappahannock Warren and Shenandoah Regional Jail on Tuesday afternoon where he is being held on a $25,000 secured bond.
“He was arrested at the Sheriff’s Office,” Dellinger said of Nicely. “We phoned him and he came in.”
Search warrant documents state that Nicely was target shooting about 936 feet from the residence where Shoemaker, 46, of Edinburg, died from a single gunshot wound. The residence was located behind the target used by Nicely and obscured by a wooded area, according to court documents.
Dellinger said the fatal shot came from a 30.06 rifle, one of three firearms authorities seized from Nicely at the scene.
“Through the investigation, we were able to determine that the path of the bullet from where Nicely was firing was directly in line with the residence where Ms. Shoemaker was and where she was struck,” Dellinger said.
Dellinger added that Sheriff’s Office officials found 30.06 bullets in the residence where Shoemaker died and in surrounding trees and outbuildings.
Nicely is scheduled to make an initial court appearance at 9 a.m. Friday.
Nicely’s teen-aged daughter was with him during the incident, but Dellinger said he was “certain” she would already have been charged if authorities were prepared to do so.
