Contest winners announced

Last month, Front Royal resident Debra Whittington was growing accustomed to strangers taking pictures of her home.

“We actually had quite a few people stop by and take photos,” she said. “We would be sitting on the front porch and people would ask to take pictures of the house.”

As the winner of Front Royal’s first ever holiday lights contest, Whittington’s home at 210 Randolph Ave. has attracted sightseers and their families for its impeccable Christmas display.

Festive LED lighting was wrapped around the front porch, fence and roof of her home, while a lit-up Christmas tree and family of snowmen greeted traveling passersby.

People could vote on the decorated homes through the Town of Front Royal Facebook page and mobile app. Whittington received 439 votes out of a total 1,342 votes cast in the contest. Other contest winners among the 10 submitted entries included 381 Hill Top Court with 325 votes and 1802 N. Royal Ave. with 176 votes.

Whittington received a $100 credit toward her utility bill for winning first place. The second and third place winners received a $50 and $25 utility bill credit.

Whittington said she didn’t know about the contest until her friends and neighbors told her about it.

“I think it’s something more people would probably get involved in if they knew about it,” she said, adding she’s already purchased more lights for next year’s contest.
