Frederick picks administrator
The Frederick County Board of Supervisors has hired Brenda Garton as the next county administrator.
Garton starts May 18 and replaces longtime County Administrator John R. Riley Jr., who retired in late January.
Garton, a veteran of more than 20 years in local government management, becomes the county’s second administrator since the late 1970s. She has served as county administrator for Gloucester County since 2008 and was county administrator for Orange County from 1993 to 2002 and held the same position in Prince George County from 2002 to 2008.
Garton, who began her career as a mathematics teacher in Albemarle and Orange counties, is a certified public accountant and has worked as a manager in an accounting firm. She served as controller and manager of plant administration for Edgcomb Metals in Troy, Virginia.
Frederick County received 41 applications for the position and the board held a series of interviews with six finalists. The board narrowed the finalists to three.
Garton holds master of education and bachelor of science in education degrees from the University of Virginia. She is an International City/County Management Association credentialed manager and serves as president of the Virginia Local Government Management Association.
