Man charged with possessing guns

Cecil Sturgell

Shenandoah County authorities arrested an Edinburg man Wednesday and charged him with possessing guns as a convicted felon.

Capt. Wesley Dellinger of the Shenandoah County Sheriff’s Office said Cecil Sturgell, 44, of 1246 Miller Road, was taken into custody after deputies executed a search warrant at his residence and found several guns inside.

Dellinger said the search warrant was executed after deputies were sent to the 1200 block of Miller Road to investigate a report of vandalism. Dellinger said the victim pointed out two holes in a metal outbuilding that appeared to have been left by bullets.

Deputies identified Sturgell as a suspect during their investigation and spoke to him at his nearby residence, Dellinger said.

“He indicated he had firearms and, during the course of the investigation, we recognized he was a convicted felon and executed a search warrant at his residence,” Dellinger said of the defendant.

Deputies found three rifles and one shotgun of unspecified caliber and model during the search, Dellinger said.

Dellinger said Sturgell was arrested with no resistance. He appeared in Shenandoah County General District Court and was later released on recognizance.

Online court records show Sturgell has an earlier felony conviction for driving after having been declared a habitual offender.

Sturgell’s next court date is scheduled for April 10 in General District Court.
