Police: Berryville man died before truck crash

Virginia State Police believe a medical condition caused the death of a man whose vehicle ran off the road Tuesday morning in northern Frederick County.

Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler of the state police identified the victim as Steven Eugene Afleck, 50, of Berryville.

Tyler said Afleck was driving his 2006 Dodge Dakota pickup south on Interstate 81 near mile marker 320 about a half-mile south of Va. 672 when it ran off the right side of the road and hit a tree shortly after 7 a.m.

Tyler said a state trooper dispatched to the scene found Afleck unresponsive and administered CPR in an effort to revive him. Afleck was taken by ambulance to Winchester Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 8:07 a.m.

“A preliminary investigation indicated that Mr. Afleck suffered from a medical condition that caused him to run off the roadway,” Tyler said. “We don’t believe the crash was serious enough to have caused his death.”

Tyler said the investigation into the crash is continuing. The state medical examiner will make a final determination on the cause of death.
