Valley Wine Cellar set to close

The Valley Wine Cellar, a retail outlet for North Mountain Vineyard & Winery, of Maurertown, will be closing its doors this weekend.

North Mountain had been renting the property located off of Old Cross Road in New Market through a lease agreement with the Shenandoah Valley Travel Association for four years.

Krista Jackson-Foster, part owner and operator of North Mountain, said the closing is “due to the fact that the building belongs to the [Shenandoah Valley Travel Association] and they are selling it.”

Donielle Rininger, operations Manager for the Shenandoah Valley Travel Association, said the lease agreement between Valley Wine Cellar and Shenandoah Valley Travel Association expires Tuesday.

The travel association has had the building on the market since Aug. 1, Rininger noted.

She added that the association previously housed its administrative offices in that location, but “those offices have been relocated.”

“We’re either looking for [a] sale or a new tenant for the building,” Rininger said, noting that the association has not received any offers, just “some interest” in the building from “nationwide developers.”

Although Valley Wine Cellar’s lease ends Tuesday, Jackson-Foster said the last day the shop will be open to the public is Sunday. She said the store will be offering a special sale of $2-off per bottle throughout the day.

Jackson-Foster added that if the building were not being sold, they would have stayed. “It was an absolutely beautiful shop in New Market.”

Chad Neese, New Market Town Planner and Zoning Administrator, said, “You obviously hate to see businesses close.”

Neese said that North Mountain hosted seasonal events at the location and helped to organize the New Market Farmers’ Market “for two summers.”

“They were definitely active in our community … in a positive way,” Neese said.

For North Mountain, Jackson-Foster indicated that the show will essentially go on at their Maurertown winery and vineyard location.

“At the moment, we are just going to focus on the vineyard and winery,” Jackson-Foster added. “North Mountain has, and always has had, the best wines in the valley. Customers can expect that whenever they come out.”
