Two face pot, child endangerment charges

A Front Royal couple faces drug and related felony child endangerment charges after town police executed a search warrant at the defendants’ residence early Sunday.

Police identified the defendants as Kelly Nicole Mills, 24, and Anthony Gene Roberts, 35, both of 648 W. 11th St. The defendants were charged with felony possession of marijuana with intent to distribute and felony child endangerment.

Police said the child endangerment charges stem from the discovery of six children under the age of 10 years old when police arrived at the residence.

Police Chief Norman Shiflett said officers were sent to the residence in the early morning hours Sunday after someone called 911 and hung up.

Shiflett said Mills answered the door and told officers no one at her address had called 911. Officers detected a strong smell of marijuana coming from inside the residence, Shiflett said.

When police asked about the odor, Mills denied there was marijuana on the premises and then tried to shut the door on police, Shiflett said.

Front Royal police Sgt. Crystal Cline said the defendants were arrested at the residence afterward.

“We secured the residence and the occupants while the search warrant was obtained,” Cline said.

Police said the items seized during the search included 5 1/2 ounces of marijuana and hashish, digital scales, baggies, smoking devices and other drug paraphernalia.

Cline said both defendants were released from custody after posting bond. The charges of felony child endangerment were filed Wednesday.

Cline said all of the children at the residence were offspring of Mills or Roberts, except for one who was visiting. She said all the children were taken away by family members after the defendants’ arrests.

Mills and Roberts are scheduled to appear in Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court at 9 a.m. April 30 for a hearing on the child endangerment charges. They also have a court appearance set for 10 a.m. May 19 in General District Court on the drug charges.
