Former manager sentenced on embezzlement

WOODSTOCK — The former manager of the Hampton Inn in Woodstock has been sentenced to one year in prison and 19 more years suspended for embezzling what the prosecution estimates to have been $78,000 from her employer.

Assistant Commonwealth’s Attorney Louis Campola said Thursday that Billie Jo Coons, of Front Royal, took the money by writing out checks to herself over a period between 2012 to 2014.

Coons was sentenced after pleading guilty in Shenandoah County Circuit Court to one count of embezzlement.

Campola said it was likely that Coons embezzled more than $78,000.

“There was loose change over the two years for which we couldn’t get a definite amount,” Campola said. “It would have been hard to prove that without a paper trail.”
