McDonald’s scholarships awarded to local students

McDonald’s Family Restaurants of Greater Washington, D.C., have announced scholarships awarded to students around the region and the greater D.C. area.

Area students include Rosie Clifton and Amber Gonzalez of Stonewall Jackson High School, Kathleen Mumper of Strasburg High School, Desiree Williams of Central High School, Mary O’Connor of Warren County High School and Shane Schwasta of James Wood High School

The McDonald’s Educates Scholarship Program has donated over $1 million to local students, the organization announced in a news release.

Scholarship winners were recognized at an awards banquet at the Winchester Country Club earlier this month.

More than 500 applications were received and reviewed by a panel of judges that included the Greater Washington, D.C., McDonald’s Owners and Operators.

Winning students displayed dedication to volunteerism, leadership, academic excellence and character, the release said.

Requirements for applicants included a completed application, two short essays and a letter of recommendation from a teacher, guidance counselor or community service leader.
