Front Royal man dies in ATV crash

The Virginia State Police are investigating a fatal crash of an all-terrain vehicle that occurred Sunday night in Warren County.

A state police news release identified the victim as Cody Allen Loyd, 19, of Front Royal.

State police said Loyd died as a result of injuries sustained in the crash at 9:46 p.m. on Va. 721.

A Warren County Sheriff’s Office deputy, Matthew Griffith, spotted Loyd’s ATV traveling southbound on Va. 638 [Howellsville Road]) at about 9:44 p.m. Sunday, state police said. Griffith activated his emergency equipment and tried to catch up to Loyd, who was riding the 2014 Yamaha ATV ahead of the deputy.

Griffith lost sight of the ATV after Loyd turned right onto Va. 721 [Fellows Road], state police said.

Griffith found the ATV overturned about a quarter mile west of the intersection. State police said the ATV ran off the right side of the road after entering a left-hand curve. The ATV hit a utility box and a utility pole and then overturned.

Loyd, who was not wearing a helmet, was ejected from the ATV, state police said.

Griffith and a citizen performed CPR on Loyd before he was taken to Warren Memorial Hospital where he died of his injuries, state police said.

Trooper K.J. Orr investigated the crash with assistance from the Virginia State Police Crash Reconstruction Team, the Warren County Sheriff’s Office and units from the Warren County Department of Fire and Rescue Services.

Sheriff Daniel T. McEathron said the state police investigation is a normal procedure for all fatalities and other serious accidents in the county.

“This just happened to be an ATV fatality and unfortunately, the victim died,” McEathron said.
