Man charged with armed robbery

Frederick County sheriff’s deputies arrested and charged a Strasburg man Sunday night after investigating an armed robbery at a convenience store at 1832 Berryville Pike.

Capt. Donnie Lang of the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office identified the defendant as Michael Tyler Channel, 29.

Lang credited a citizen’s 911 call for alerting deputies to the robbery while Channel was still in the store.

The citizen reported the robbery after walking into the store at about 7:35 p.m. and seeing the robbery in progress, Lang said.

The citizen called 911 after leaving the store, Lang said.

“The concerned citizen giving us a heads up before [Channel] left the store helped out a lot,” Lang said, adding that most reports of armed robberies are received after the suspect has fled the scene.

Deputies arriving at the convenience store obtained descriptions of the robber from the store clerk and the citizen, both of whom reported that he had been armed with a knife.

Lang said deputies found Channel near the convenience store and charged him with armed robbery.

“There’s a tree line and some woods out back of the store, and he just made it a very short distance,” Lang said of Channel, adding, “once he was approached by law enforcement he was taken into custody without any incident.”

Lang said sheriff’s deputies recovered a knife during the investigation but he could not confirm it was same weapon used in the robbery.
