Standoff with law enforcement ends in suicide

A standoff between law enforcement officials and a man armed with a gun ended Wednesday when a Virginia State Police SWAT team entered the apartment where he had barricaded himself and found him dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

Authorities withheld the name of the man until his family members are notified.

A news release from the Winchester Police Department stated that the SWAT team found the man dead inside the apartment at about 4 p.m., ending a standoff that began at about 10 a.m. when Winchester police arrived at the apartment.

Authorities evacuated parts of the area for the protection of local residents and began negotiations with the man over the telephone. The suspect fired a shot out of a second story window in the direction of officers at about 11:44 a.m.

A crisis negotiation team lost contact with the male and a SWAT team then attempted to flush the man from the building by firing tear gas inside, police said. The SWAT team entered the building a few hours later.

The Winchester City Sheriff’s Office worked with the state police and Winchester police at the scene throughout the day.
