County receives top award for financial reporting

FRONT ROYAL – Warren County recently earned its first top award for financial reporting from a national organization.

The Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada awarded the county the Certificate of Achievement for Excellence in Financial Reporting for its Comprehensive Annual Financial Report for fiscal 2014. The county has received other awards from the association. The certificate is the highest form of recognition in the area of government accounting and financial reporting, according to information from the association.

Tanya Burrell, chairwoman of the Virginia Government Finance Officers Association’s Award Committee presented the award to Warren County officials Tuesday. Burrell also works as the chief of the financial operations division for Fairfax County. Burrell recognized recently retired Finance Director Carolyn Stimmel, Deputy Finance Director Andre Fletcher and County Administrator Doug Stanley.

“The GFOA established the certificate program to encourage and assist state and local governments to go beyond the minimum requirements of generally accepted accounting principals; to prepare comprehensive, annual financial reports … that evidence the spirit of transparency and full disclosure,” Burrell read to the board from a statement.

Only 37 of Virginia’s 95 counties have received the certificate, Stanley noted.

An impartial panel reviewed the county’s report to see if the document met the standards of the achievement program, Burrell explained.

The county’s budget reports have received Distinguished Budget Presentation awards from the association for the past several years.

The county posts its comprehensive annual financial reports at www.warrencountyva.net under the resources menu.
