Man dies in two-vehicle crash

A Winchester man died after a two-vehicle crash early Monday night in the 2700 block of Coal Mine Road.

Sgt. F.L. “Les” Tyler of the Virginia State Police identified the victim as Charles Ray Sunderlin, 85, of Winchester.

Tyler said a 2013 Honda Elantra driven by Sandra M. Pultz, 28, of West Virginia, was traveling northbound, crossed the wrong side of the road and hit a southbound 1998 Toyota Tacoma pickup truck driven by Sunderlin. Sunderlin was taken to Winchester Medical Center where he died as a result of his injuries at 7:36 p.m., Tyler said.

Tyler said Pultz was charged with reckless driving. A post-crash investigation conducted by trooper D.W. Burkholder, a state police crash investigation team and the Virginia Department of Transportation concluded that driver inattention was a major factor in the crash, Tyler said.
