Dementia and Alzheimer’s care event slated

A dementia and Alzheimer’s care event is planned for Nov. 2 for families of those suffering from the illnesses.

Speakers for “Planning and Preparation for the Road Ahead: Dementia and Alzheimer’s Care” will discuss diagnosis, medications, financial planning, and treatments for patients with memory impairments.

Linda Kurtz, marketing director for Dutch Haven Assisted Living and Memory Care, said that she hopes those who attend will “glean information that will help them in caring and understanding the different issues that their loved ones face on a daily basis with dementia.”

“We will have Dr. Fowler and Dr. Lizer jointly speaking and available for questions and then Rick Gow will address the financial needs and options for their loved ones with dementia,” Kurtz said.

Lauren Demmon, a speech pathologist, will discuss swallowing issues those with dementia have. “And ending the morning will be Robert B. Schaefer, author of “Alzheimer’s – The Identity Thief of the 21st Century,” sharing about his journey with his wife with the disease.”

Speakers at the event include:

  • Mariecken Fowler, of Winchester Neurological Consultants
  • James R. Lizer, of Blue Ridge Counseling Center
  • Rick Gow, a certified senior adviser
  • Lauren Demmon, speech therapist
  • Robert B. Shaefer, author of “Alzheimer’s – The Identity Thief of the 21st Century”

The event will be held from 8 a.m. until noon Nov. 2 at the Winchester Medical Center Conference Center and is sponsored by Valley Health Behavioral Health at Winchester Medical Center and Dutch Haven Assisted Living and Memory Care.
