Two killed in I-81 crash

Two people died and a third was injured in a three-vehicle accident Tuesday morning on Interstate 81 in southern Frederick County.

Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler of the Virginia State Police identified the fatalities as Tyler Scott Marshall, 19, of Wardensville, West Virginia, and Kathleen Haugen, 54, of Florida.

Tyler said Marshall’s 2004 Hyundai was traveling southbound at 9:02 a.m. on Interstate 81 in the area of mile marker 303 when the vehicle ran off the road, through the median and into the northbound side of the road. Marshall’s vehicle hit a 2008 Honda Accord driven by Haugen in the northbound lane.

After the impact, Tyler said, Haugen’s Honda hit a 2002 Honda van driven by Vincent Genovese, 68, of Woodstock. Genovese was uninjured, but his wife, Ellen, 68, who was a passenger, was taken to Shenandoah Memorial Hospital, Tyler said.

Tyler said Haugen died at the scene of injuries from the crash. Marshall was taken to Winchester Medical Center where he died from crash injuries at 10:31 a.m., Tyler said.

The cause of the crash is still under investigation.

Tyler said the northbound lanes of I-81 were closed until 10:30 a.m. All lanes were opened at 11 a.m.

The state police investigation of the crash scene was aided by the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office, the Frederick County Department of Fire and Rescue, the Frederick County Sheriff’s Office and the Virginia Department of Transportation.
