Local woman sentenced in fatal heroin overdose

A Stephens City woman was sentenced Wednesday in U.S. District Court in Harrisonburg to more than nine years in prison for her role in a fatal heroin overdose.

The defendant, Brandy Dawn Kelly, 37, pleaded guilty at an earlier hearing to one count of distributing heroin that caused a fatal overdose.

U.S. District Judge Michael F. Urbanski sentenced Kelly to nine years and four months in prison as a result of her purchase of heroin from a man who authorities have accused of traveling to Baltimore to make his own purchase of heroin and selling it to Kelly in Winchester in mid-March 2014.

A statement of facts signed by Kelly states she gave about three bags of heroin, each containing about one gram of the drug, to the victim, who was found dead hours later in her Winchester residence of what later proved to be a heroin and cocaine overdose.

A written statement from the U.S. Attorney’s Office identified the man who sold the heroin to Kelly as Scott Pierce. Pierce and another man, Christopher Giles, are also facing charges for their alleged roles in the overdose death.
