Man dies in car crash
A single-car crash on Liberty Furnace Road north of Basye has taken the life of a New Market man.
Virginia State Police identified the victim as Richard Lee Roach, 51. He died at 7:54 p.m. Monday at the University of Virginia Medical Center in Charlottesville, a day after the accident.
Sgt. F.L. (Les) Tyler of the Virginia State Police said Roach was a front seat passenger in a vehicle drive by Aaron M. Gilson, 31, also of New Market.
Gilson’s 1993 two-door Chevrolet car was westbound on Liberty Furnace Road, about one-tenth of a mile east of Bowers Lane, when it ran off the left side of the road, hit a tree and overturned, Tyler said.
Tina Roach, a passenger in the backseat of the vehicle, was ejected from the vehicle with Richard Roach.
Gilson, who was uninjured in the crash, was charged with reckless driving and driving without car insurance, Tyler said. State Trooper C.D. White led the investigation of the accident.
Tyler said he was unsure if Richard and Tina Roach were related to each other.
Tina Roach was also seriously injured in the crash. She remained hospitalized at U.Va Medical Center Thursday afternoon.
“She is in stable but critical condition,” a hospital representative said of her.
