Regional Veterans Benefits office opens in Strasburg

STRASBURG – A new regional Veterans Benefits office will hold a grand opening ceremony today.

The public is invited to the event, which begins at noon at the office located at 105 Stony Pointe Way, Suite 220.

Teresa Taylor, veteran service representative and retired 10-year navy veteran, said everyone is welcome to the grand opening, “veterans and non-veterans. Most families have a veteran. They can come in and see what it’s about and pass on information.”

Those scheduled to speak include Virginia Department of Veterans Services Commissioner John L. Newby II and department Benefits Director Thomas J. Herthel. Strasburg Mayor Timothy Taylor will also speak.

The new office, which was moved to Strasburg from its previous location at 11A Water St. in Front Royal,  has been open since Nov. 4.

Geoffrey White, veteran service representative and a retired U.S. Navy first class petty officer, said, “We help veterans get their benefits from the VA. We not only help the veterans, we help their families.”

Teresa Taylor noted the office is “like an advocate for the veteran to the VA.”

The benefits office services include help with health benefits, disability compensation, VA pensions, survivor benefits and home loan guarantees, as well as hunting, fishing and trapping licenses.

White said they would like to help all veterans, but they need the public to know that they are now in Strasburg.

“No one realizes how many veterans are in the valley. There’s a lot,” he said.

The veterans they will be helping are not just from the Strasburg area.  The office is assigned to the city of Winchester and seven counties – Clarke, Fauquier, Frederick, Page, Rappahannock, Shenandoah, and Warren counties, and the city of Winchester.

White and Taylor will be traveling to the other counties to provide services to veterans who are not able to travel to Strasburg.

Office hours are from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. You can reach them at 540-635-4201.
