Tight race for Shenandoah County School Board

R.L. “Rick” Koontz Jr., Cyndy D. Walsh, and Sonya Williams-Giersch won seats on the school board for Shenandoah County in Tuesday’s election, according to unofficial results.

Eight residents vied for three open school board seats for Shenandoah County Public Schools.

According to unofficial results on the Virginia Department of Elections website, in District 2, Current Chairman of the Board R.L. “Rick” Koontz Jr. has been re-elected, receiving 685 votes, or 40.68 percent. Koontz ran against Barbara C. Bliss, who received 318 votes, or 18.88 percent, and Joanie B. Hovatter, who received 679 votes, or 40.32 percent. Koontz won by .36 percent against Hovatter.

In District 3, Cyndy D. Walsh replaces Kathryn Holsinger, who chose not to seek another term. Walsh received 799 votes, or 38.54 percent. Walsh ran against D. Roger Barbee, who received 557 votes, or 26.87 percent, and Steve D. Wood, who received 713 votes, or 34.39 percent.

District 6 representative Williams-Giersch has been re-elected, receiving 838 votes, or 75.36 percent. She ran against Van C. Holmes III, who received 270 votes, or 24.28 percent.

Those elected will begin their term on Jan. 1.
